If you suspect your child has been sexually violated at the hands of an individual in a position of trust or authority (e.g., teacher, coach, priest, mentor, scout leader, therapist, doctor or nurse…), you are at the start of a long journey that no parent wants to take. The criminal justice system will punish the perpetrator, but what about the needs of your child and family? Children are resilient, but they need help – often for years – and help costs money. With the perpetrator incarcerated, where does that money come from? Our experience shows that frequently the school district, church, etc., either knew that something was not right but did not act, or failed to have the systems and procedures in place to prevent the abuse.
